As a result of the implementation of the AP 8 in all of Prince George’s County high schools, students have at least eight AP courses to choose from. There have had a dramatic increase in the number of students taking Advanced Placement courses. We believe in the College Board statement, “AP is not for the elite but for the prepared.” Through the AP Summer Bridge Program our district is committed to provide students with the studying, coping and planning skills needed to manage the demands of the AP courses they will be taking in the Fall. This year the program will be expanded beyond the 5 Smaller Learning Community Schools to include any AP student in the district who wants to attend and there are six additional sites they may attend: Laurel, Dr. Henry A Wise, Largo, Fairmont Heights, Northwestern and Surrattsville. The students from these schools will get a chance to meet an actual AP teacher and learn more about the AP courses in which they are enrolled. The lessons are designed to serve as a “bridge” between the student’s pre-AP experiences and the AP challenges they will encounter. This program is especially committed to reaching out to the non- traditional student capable of being successful in AP courses who will benefit from the skills and confidence that will be gained in a bridge program.
